What is Mozilla? Mozilla is a modern and flexible open source browser, and forms the basis for Netscape 6 and other browsers. Simply put, Mozilla lets you see pages on the Internet, just as binoculars let you see far off objects. Both browsers and binoculars aid the eyes in seeing something they otherwise couldn't. Mozilla also includes the ability to help you create your own webpage,to check and send email, and to read and respond to newsgroups. It also includes an IRC chat program. Mozilla is maintained by the Mozilla Organization, otherwise known as Mozilla.org. Take the Mozilla Tour (opens in a new window), and see for yourself what it can do for you. You can also view the Mozilla Tour in this window Why use Mozilla? Now that you know what Mozilla is, you might be wondering: "Why use Mozilla when I already have Internet Explorer?" Here are some good answers: a. Mozilla is a modern browser, and is fast, free and fun. Getting Mozilla is a snap - With a relatively small download size of around 11 megabytes(for the Windows version), even dial-up Interet users can download Mozilla in about thirty to forty minutes. Mozilla's size is certainly smaller than that of Internet Explorer 6 or Netscape 4.x. b. Whether its browsing the web, checking your email, or designing your webpage, Mozilla does the job reliably and easily. c. It works reliably, and safely - letting you browse the web, while keeping your private information safe. d. It puts *you* in control of how *you* experience the web. Don't like pop-ups? Turn them off with a single click in Mozilla! Don't want cookies from a particular site? You decide which sites can and cannot send you cookies. Forget that password again? Mozilla can remember it for you, and provide it the next time you need it. Yet, your password can be stored safely (by encrypting it), keeping it away from the hands of hackers. e. It works not only on Windows, but also on the Macintosh and on Linux . With Mozilla, browsing the web means that you have the same experience, whether you are using Windows, are on an iMac, or something else. All versions of Mozilla are released simultaneously; that means that Mac users do not have to wait longer than Windows users for a modern, usable browser. And because all Mozilla versions use the same document object model (DOM), regardless of the operating system (OS) it is running on, web developers do not have rewrite their pages for different OS versions of the same browser. f. It suports "Write Once, Read Anywhere" : Standards-based webpages which look good in Mozilla, can look good in any other standards-compliant browser. It is built on open standards and is supported by an open community. Next: OR Read what Mozilla's creators have to say about it, in their weblogs:
People who are unfamiliar with Mozilla may wonder who the people behind Mozilla are, and what they think about the Mozilla project. With the sudden popularity of weblogging (blogging) among many in the Mozilla community, the newcomer has his chance to see who these people are and what they think. MozTips drew up this Mozilla Mindmap for you, with links to the weblogs of some active members of the Mozilla community and to related websites. Note: this diagram is not comprehensive, and may not be 100% accurate, but hopefully it will give you a better overview of the human side of the Mozilla project.
