Where is Mozilla (finding Mozilla.org) ?

The main website for Mozilla is Mozilla.org, which is maintained by the Mozilla Organization. Note: this site can be intimidating to first time users: it has plenty of jargon, and warnings about things such as "binary distributions", "developer docs" and "nightly builds". Don't let this scare you away! Take this five minute overview of Mozilla.org or brush up on Mozilla jargonbefore you head there.

Download Mozilla 1.0:Mozilla 1.0 was made available on June 5, 2002. This version is the final version so many of you have been waiting for! Get it while it's hot!

(Note: Mozilla 1.1 alpha and 1.1 beta have already been released after Mozilla 1.0, but these have been not as stable as Mozilla 1.0. Mozilla 1.1 final should be released soon, and should be really, really fast and stable too.)

It is highly recommended you read the following information before installing or using Mozilla. If you still would like to download Mozilla without reading this information, you can jump to the download tablebelow.

I. Guide to installing Moz 1.0

Important: Read this document before installing Mozilla 1.0.

1)Do not install Mozilla 1.0 over a previously installed (earlier) version, such as Mozilla 1.0 RC 3 as this could lead to problems while using Mozilla. If you have a version of Mozilla older than 1.0 installed, you need to do one of the following things:

a.) Install Mozilla 1.0 into a new directory, such as C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\mozilla1_0
OR
b.) Uninstall the older version of Mozilla first, and then install verion 1.0 to same directory the older version of Mozilla was installed to.

Important Notes: If you are using Netscape 6+ or 7.0 along with Mozilla, be sure to avoid using the same profile with both Netscape and Mozilla. This could cause your profile or data to become corrupted (damaged or unusable).

If you have Netscape Communicator 4.x installed, there is no need to uninstall it - it should coexist perfectly with Mozilla.

Before you install Mozilla 1.0 , it is highly recommended that you backup the following items:
Your user profile (Your Profile contains your bookmarks, preferences, email files, passwords and more.) (How do I do this?)
Your email files. (How do I do this?)

2.)It may be faster for you to download Mozilla from a mirror site in your country rather than the main Mozilla.org download site.

II. Other important notes to keep in mind before using Mozilla:

1.)If you have installed Mozilla 1.0 over (i.e. in the same directory as) a previous version, it will probably not function correctly. If you experience weird behavior, the best solution is to uninstall all versions of Mozilla that you have, and to install Mozilla again. But before you do this, do back up your bookmark, email and profile files as listed in the "Guide to installing Moz 1.0" section. 2.)A tip for Netscape 7.0 PR 1 users: Do not share your Mozilla Profile with Netscape (even if you have Mozilla 1.0 RC 2+), because that can cause your Profile to get corrupted, or Netscape to malfunction. Instead, create a new Profile for Netscape 7.0 PR 1.

III. Other general notes to keep in mind while using Mozilla:

1.) If you are using the classic theme, you may be unable to minimize Mozilla. The two workarounds for this are:
a.)Switch to the modern theme.
b.)If you prefer using the classic theme, right click on the Windows Taskbar (the bar between the Start button on the bottom left and the clock on the bottom right of the screen) and click on "minimize all windows".

Mozilla Discussion and Help Sites:

  • MozillaZine: Ask questions, or contribute your opinion about Mozilla. A Mozilla "Community Site".
  • Holger's Mozilla Tips Site : An excellent site with information on getting plugins to work, and on customizing Mozilla. In English and German.
  • Gunnar's Mozilla Site contains excellent help on installing Mozilla.
  • The NewZilla FAQ: An excellent list of (slightly outdated) Frequently Asked Questions (and answers) about Mozilla and Netscape.
  • Developer Newsgroups: (also available at Google Groups) Head to Google Groups and search for "Mozilla general" . (Google Groups lets you search through thousands of discussion forums, and post your own messages to them too.)
  • User Newsgroups: Performing a search on Google for Mozilla (as explained above) will probably lead you to developer newsgroups. Since there have been many messages posted to the developer newsgroups since Mozilla 1.0, new user newsgroups have been set up. If you are new to Mozilla, it is recommended you visit the user newsgroups. Unfortunately, the user newsgroups are not accessible via Google, so you will have to use Mozilla Messenger (Mail and Newsgroups) to access them (from the Window menu). By clicking on the links below, and restarting Mozilla thereafter, you should find these user newsgroups accessible in Mozilla Messenger.

Getting new Themes for Mozilla.

Note:
Many Themes are now available for Mozilla 1.0 . If you have Netscape 7.0 PR 1, check for a special Netscape 7 version of the Theme at the Theme site or ask the Theme author.

  • DeskMod: Great new Mozilla Themes site, which has graciously taken over from the overburdened Xulplanet.com. (Xulplanet's traffic was too high for its author to afford. Please use Deskmod instead from now on.)
  • Themes.mozdev.org : A great, comprehensive Themes site at Mozdev, which also has a list of Netscape 7 compatible Themes.
  • Alfred Kaiser's Themes.
  • Cool Themes at Kairo.at .
